Around 1500 years before, during the 6th Century, the Maukharis ruled large parts of the territories now comprising the Indian subcontinent. The real history of the Maukhari dynasty also called Megar dynasty s shrouded in mystery and it the phenomenon of the rise and eventual fall of this dynasty is a puzzle of Indian history shrouded in mystery inside and enigma. At the initial stages of their emergence as prominent power players, Maukharis were vassals of the Guptas. They were also related to the Harsha. They ruled from Kannuj during the 6th century. However, like Diwali firecrackers their rise and fall were shortlived. By 606 AD, Later Gupta reconquered their Maukhari territories and Maukharis lost power. The clans were being hunted ruthlessly and they found shelter in the deep forests and ravines on the fringes the ChotaNagpur Plateau in forests of Rajauli and Rajgriha.
Over several centuries, Maukharis continued to hide their true
identities and their generations forgot about the lineage though in some
families the legends of their glorious past survived as family lore and
tradition. The name also underwent great transformation and became Mahuri. The
vocation also got transformed from warrior clans to being clans of doing
commerce and trading.
